I got the Star switched over from Mambo to Joomla, then went on a spree of adding modules and components that weren't compatible with Mambo. Joomla has some oddities, but all is stable now. Which brings me to Joomla 1.5, the new version that has not been quite released yet. I'm trying it on the ABDKV site -- there are some things that are very different, but I am likeing it a lot. It seems they fixed some illogical things about the ideas behind it. I think it could be nice - |

I got a nice note from Matthew Shulman congratulating us on getting to our 30th issue. Can you believe it? 30 issues and still going. This is a great town to report on, and we have been growing all this time, so I am hoping we’re on to something. Meanwhile I keep thinking I can get ahead, but that doesn’t seem to be happening! I’d love to at least get some Dr. Digits in the can, and maybe get ahead on business profiles… So little time, so much to do… |

Last week I learned more about pairlist’s mailman than I wanted to. Written by unix geeks, the documentation is “virtual” and they don’t even call things what would make sense. But the price is right so I am not complaining. Anyway the flag that doesn’t allow list members’ mail to go out somehow got unchecked (whichever flag that may be…) and when a subscriber replied to the official mail to remind me to cover a story about 800 of my best friends got it. I got IMs and e-mail all day, though we only lost one subscriber to the maillist (and we didn’t necessarily lose her as a reader of the Star). The sender got a lot of e-mail that day telling her that the recipients weren’t me. So I sent an apology in the next official mail to the list and it seems to have blown over. But OH BOY did I NOT forget to cover that meeting! |

I wrote a story about the sewer committee last week and gave it the headline, “Town Must Build Sewer or Get Off the Pot”. I have to tell you I got more response to that headline than to any other story since we began publishing! Only one response to the actual story, but possibly a dozen to the headline. Which just goes to show that I have to make the time to come up with better headlines. |

Some stories are really fun to cover, and I have my favorites. I loved it when Senator Nozzolio showed up with a $100,000 check for the Lansing Community Library Center. I really enjoyed the temple dedication story, because everyone there was so joyous. Recently I liked a story about a four year old boy saving his mother’s life in a fire. In another way I liked the airplane crash story. I didn’t like that it happened, but I liked getting the story for the Star. |
